The solar initiative has been approved

The federal popular initiative "For a secure supply of renewable energies (Solar Initiative)" submitted on December 10, 2025, has formally come into being. This was confirmed by the Federal Chancellery's review of the signature lists.

According to the initiators of the Solar Initiative, there are enough suitable roofs and facades in Switzerland to cover more than the current electricity demand with solar energy. The Solar Initiative aims to install solar panels on all suitable buildings. "This will finally allow us to move forward with the energy transition!" says the political party 'GRÜNE Schweiz' (Green Party Switzerland).

Climate protection argument

Solar power is good for the climate because the system does not emit CO2 during electricity production. Renewable energies are also increasingly being used for the manufacture, transport, and disposal of solar panels.

Argument: Security of supply

Solar energy is produced where it is needed. This will end our dependence on fossil fuels from abroad and thus also the financing of regimes that fund repression and wars.

Argument: affordable electricity

The sun shines for free. Once installed, a solar power system provides cheap and clean solar power for decades. This represents huge untapped potential for Switzerland.

The Federal Chancellery's review of the signature lists has shown that 106,499 of the 108,786 signatures submitted are valid. This means that the solar initiative has formally come into being.
